What is virtualization?

Virtualization is the process of creating virtual versions of computer resoureces such as hardware platforms, operating systems, storage devices, or network resources. It allows multiple virtual instances of run concurrently on a single physical machine. Key components include virtual machines (VMs), a hypervisor for management, and host and guest machines. Virtualization types include full, para-virtualization and hardware-assisted virtualization. Benefits include resouces optimization improved hardware utilization, scalability and easier disaster recovery.

What is Hypervisor?

A hypervisor is a software layer that enables the multiple virtual machines (VMs) to run on a single physical machine.

There are many types of Hypervisor

1) Type-1 Hypervisor

2) Type-2 Hypervisor

Type-1 Hypervisor (Bare Metal Hypervisor)

# This type of hypervisor runs directly on the physical hardware of the host machine, without the need for an underlying operating system. It provides direct access to the physical hardware resources and typically offers better performance and scalability compared to Type 2 hypervisors.

Examples of Type 1 hypervisors include Microsoft Hyper-V (when used in standalone mode), KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine).

Type 2 Hypervisor (Hosted Hypervisor):

# This type of hypervisor runs on top of a conventional operating system, such as Windows, Linux, or macOS.

# It relies on the host operating system for managing hardware resources and provides virtualization services to guest operating systems. Type 2 hypervisors are typically used for development, testing, and desktop virtualization scenarios.

Examples of Type 2 hypervisors include VMware Workstation, Oracle, VirtualBox.
